HTML 5 Weekly Review

With the announcement that the XHTML 2 Working Group will be dissolved at the end of the year to free up resources for work on the HTML 5 spec, it seems we have a clear frontrunner—at least in the eyes of the W3C—for the web’s next markup language. In an effort to keep up with the newest version of HTML and all the browsers that will ultimately support it, I’ve put together a weekly review of all things HTML 5. This week: the doctor is in, XHTML 2 is out and Mozilla takes a trip to Shiretoko.

Last Thursday, the the World Wide Web Consortium made the decision to dissolve the XHTML 2 Working Group in order to provide more resources to the development of HTML 5. The groups will most likely merge and the W3C has maintained that there will be an XML serialization of HTML 5. An FAQ on the changes and the future of XHTML is available on the W3C’s website.

Mozilla Releases Firefox 3.5
Code-named Shiretoko after the remote Japanese national park, Firefox 3.5 brings new support for the HTML 5 audio and video elements, offline resources and the drag and drop API.

HTML 5 Doctor
The result of a meetup after FOWD London, HTML 5 Doctor is a great resource for news and information on HTML 5. The even have an Ask the Doctor section where curious developers can ask questions about the new spec.

Author’s Note: This article will normally appear weekly on Friday. This first installment is a little late due to the Fourth of July holiday.
